Songfacts®:

  • Coldplay's song "The Karate Kid" is about hope, connection, and finding your inner champion in a challenging world. And yes, it's inspired by the beloved 1984 film that taught us all the value of wax-on, wax-off as a life philosophy.
  • Coldplay frontman Chris Martin drew a parallel between the song's message of resilience and Daniel LaRusso's journey in the Karate Kid series. "When I sing 'Daniel,' I'm singing to that inner part of myself that needs to win the karate competition with life," Martin told a crowd during a SiriusXM session in Brooklyn.
  • The lyrics reference Daniel's uncanny ability to rise above the odds.

Oh, Daniel knows how to make a dream
How to make a dream come true

As the scrappy underdog Daniel uses karate to outmaneuver bullies and win the All-Valley Karate Championship, Coldplay's song grapples with finding light amid life's inevitable darkness.

As much as I could, as much as I tried
I just couldn't seem to find the light
  • The song is one of three new tracks on the deluxe Full Moon Edition of Coldplay's album Moon Music.
  • John Metcalfe of Durutti Column arranged the strings. He performed the same task on three of the Moon Music standard edition tracks.
  • Frequent Coldplay collaborator Bill Rahko produced "The Karate Kid" with additional production from Matty Healy of The 1975. Healy also plays keyboards on the track.
  • Coldplay premiered the song live on October 31, 2024, during their Music Of The Spheres tour stop in Melbourne. Before launching into the track, Chris Martin feigned losing his voice and called out to the audience for help. Ralph Macchio, who played Daniel LaRusso in the original The Karate Kid trilogy, walked onto the stage to a hero's welcome from the crowd. While Macchio appeared to join in, it soon became clear he was lip-syncing to Martin's pre-recorded vocals.
  • The "Ralph Macchio sings Coldplay" bit is portrayed in the music video, directed by Chris Candy and shot in Melbourne. We see Macchio playing a down-and-out busker who stumbles upon a ticket to a Coldplay show and gets invited onstage to help Martin perform the song.

Coldplay reached out to Macchio after the actor said he thought "The Karate Kid" was a "beautiful track."

"When Chris Martin pops up on your FaceTime asking you to help create a video to accompany what I found to be a beautifully emotional and poignant song - one inspired by a film I made over 40 years ago - there was only one answer," Macchio said of the collaboration.
