Songfacts®:

  • "Balut" finds Doja Cat flaunting her success, which sets her apart from her peers. She makes it look as easy as snatching candy from a baby.

And when it comes to those rumors about her use of drugs, Doja isn't having any. She's puts it straight, asking the accusers what does "she put in them hits?"
  • Doja kicks off the downtempo boom-bap jam with a sample of wresting legend Ric Flair:

Remember this, girls. None of you can be first, but all of you can be next.

The intro sets a triumphant tone from the start. It's a warning that nobody can outdo Doja, but you can try to follow in her footsteps.
  • "Balut" is a fertilized bird egg (usually a duck) incubated for two to three weeks and then steamed up. It is a popular street food in the Philippines and other Southeast Asia countries, such as Cambodia and Vietnam.

The term does not appear in the lyrics. "I named the song Balut because it signifies a bird that's being eaten alive," wrote Doja on Instagram. "It's a metaphor for twitter stans and the death of twitter toxicity. The beginning of 'X' and the end of 'tweets.'"

The title may also be a reference to Ric Flair's popular saying, "I Da! Ba-Loot!"
  • Yeti Beats and Roget Chahayed produced the laid-back rap track. Chahayed also co-wrote the song alongside Doja, Y2K and Kurtis McKenzie.

Roget Chahayed has co-produced and co-written several of Doja's biggest hits, including "Kiss Me More," "Ain't S--t," and "Vegas." He has also worked with a wide range of other artists, including Travis Scott, Drake, and Halsey.
