Songfacts®:

  • This song is sung in the musical movie La La Land by Emma Stone's aspiring actress character, Mia. It finds her vowing never to give up on her dreams. Her vocals were recorded live onset in one unbroken shot.
  • The music was composed by director Damien Chazelle's former Harvard roommate Justin Hurwitz while the lyrics were provided by musical theatre veterans Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. La La Land music director and soundtrack producer, Marius de Vries recalled to The Independent regarding this song:

"It took a while to find the orchestration on this one - we spent a long time trying to make it fully orchestral and remove the piano entirely, before it found its current balance, and then it took a while to calibrate the orchestra entering so delicately but needing to get really expansive by the final chorus without overwhelming the voice."
