Songfacts®:

  • This R&B-influenced pop song is about being a victim of violence. It is based on an combination of actual incidents that happened to Everything Everything singer Jonathan Higgs.

You must have bust me out of my head
I'm wondering how did I get this blood all over me?
I got the pictures here on my phone,
    I can't remember
Was it a Friday night? Was it a Saturday night?

Higgs pretends he got so drunk he can't remember how he got beaten up. In reality, he recalls the incident, but doesn't want to deal with it, preferring to explain it away by recounting a wild night out. "It's kind of like someone telling you 'Oh, it was just a crazy night out, I dunno what happened' and you kind of know that they do know," Higgs told We Talk about Music.
  • Everything Everything released "Bad Friday" as the lead single from Raw Delta Feel. The band's guitarist, Alex Robertshaw, produced the album.
  • The account of denying part of a memory feeds into the album's theme of trying to turn horror and trauma into something positive. It's reflected in the record's sound as well. "A lot of technology meeting organic sounds," explained Higgs. "I think there is a certain type of interaction between [Robertshaw's] technology and the human that is using it which is quite unique."
  • Higgs co-directed the song's music video with Kit Monteith (Foals' "What Went Down," Everything Everything's "Night of the Long Knives"). "We wanted the video to have a monochrome Ink Spots classicism to it, disrupted by elements of A.I.-generated imagery," said Higgs. "This reflects the approach to writing and producing the song – the minimalistic combined with the surreal and disorientating."
