• Foo Fighters released "Today's Song" on July 2, 2025, in celebration of the 30th anniversary of their self-titled debut album. The track was their first new music since But Here We Are in 2023, and their first release following the departure of drummer Josh Freese.

It's about the unity and perseverance that powered Foo Fighters through lineup changes, grief, fatherhood, heartbreak, awards, and some truly dangerous stage diving (Grohl broke his leg in 2015 when he fell off the stage during a Foo Fighters concert in Gothenburg, Sweden, after attempting a stage dive).
  
  If "Everlong" was the passionate confession and "My Hero" was the admiration anthem, "Today's Song" is about the days you get through because of the people next to you.
• The song also serves as a tribute to former members of the band, including Josh Freese, William Goldsmith, Franz Stahl and the late Taylor Hawkins.
  
  "Over the years, we've had moments of unbridled joy, and moments of devastating heartbreak," said Grohl. "Moments of beautiful victory, and moments of painful defeat. We have mended broken bones and broken hearts. But we have followed this road together, with each other, for each other, no matter what. Because in life, you just can't go it alone."
• Foo Fighters wrote and produced "Today's Song," with additional production by Oliver Roman. Oliver Roman has been a longtime in-house engineer at Studio 606, the Foo Fighters' recording studio, and has collaborated with the band on various projects over the years.
• Dave Grohl's daughter Harper designed the single's cover art.
• "Today's Song" came out of Dave Grohl's experience of learning how to live again after loss. Speaking to Mojo magazine, he explained that writing the track felt like "breaking the ice" after an extended period of grief.
  
  "After experiencing death or a long period of grief, you have to do everything all over again within the context of this new life," Grohl explained. He recalled feeling that exact same disorientation following the 1994 death of his Nirvana bandmate, Kurt Cobain: "I woke up, made a cup of coffee and thought, 'This is my first cup of coffee since Kurt passed.'"
  
  That mundane moment illustrates the song's underlying theme: after a tragedy, even the most ordinary routines suddenly feel alien. You're forced to retrace your steps from a completely different perspective, without the person who used to be there.
  
  For Grohl, the key to moving forward was momentum, even with no clear destination in sight. "You must jump in the river," he said, referencing the song's lyric: "Two sides to a river. Too troubled to cross."
  
  "It took all of the years leading up to that song to get to the place where I could write it, fully understand it, and really mean it," Grohl added.
  
  When asked how he finally arrived at that point, his answer was decidedly less poetic: "It's a lot of effing therapy," he laughed.
