  • Halsey first met Turkish-American screenwriter Alev Aydin several years before they started dating. The singer fell in love with him but he was in a relationship with someone else. Halsey still hoped he would dump his partner for her, as they would be "so good" for each other.

Eventually, Alev told his lover it's over and he started dating Halsey in mid-2020. This song tells the tale of the circuitous path their love took. "It's about Alev," Halsey tweeted. "Part of the story of how we went from meeting and keeping touch randomly for years to realizing we were each others person all along. Right person wrong time type of song."
  • According to Halsey, "So Good" is "about the friend that was always there for me, who I realized I was in love with one day."
  • Halsey name-checks her brand manager and close friend Maria Margarita Endicott in the bridge.

Maria calls me and she says she's getting married
She asked me if there's any extra weight I carry
And do I think about the one that got away
I know his name, I think about him every day

Having told Halsey she's getting hitched, Maria worries it may intensify the singer's agony about Alev.

"I shout out Maria in the song and it's so funny because she is so like, NOT wanting to be in the spotlight I really just put her entire name on blast," Halsey tweeted. "Just best friends things."
  • Halsey wrote "So Good" with Australian singer-songwriter Sarah Aarons and producer-songwriter Sammy Witte. Sarah Aarons' other credits include Zedd's "Stay" and Maren Morris' "Girl." Witte is best known for his work with Harry Styles that includes "Cherry" and "Cinema."
  • Halsey loved the song and wanted to release it, but Capitol Music Group were unenthusiastic, deeming it slow and emotional. The pop star reworked the track with producers Max Martin and Tobias Karlsson, but her label still refused to issue it without a viral TikTok campaign. When Halsey vented her frustrations online, complaining "everything is marketing," Capitol denied they stood in the artist's way and announced the release of "So Good" on June 9, 2022. Perhaps this was the viral campaign Capitol wanted all along.
  • The Swedish co-producer Tobias Karlsson played all the instruments (guitar, bass and keyboards). He's also produced for Carolina Liar ("Show Me What I'm Looking For") Adam Lambert ("Ghost Town"), and Joji ("Upgrade").
  • Alev Aydin directed the song's video, which recounts his and Halsey's love story. The couple star in the visual as themselves; actors Charlie Oldman and Sora Connor, and model Tatiana de Campos Ringsby join them.
  • Halsey sang "So Good" live for the first time on June 11, 2022, during her headlining performance at Governors Ball in New York.
