Songfacts®:

  • This filthy retro blues jam was penned by American mid 20th century R&B songwriter Rudy Toombs, who also wrote The Clovers and Ray Charles hit "One Mint Julep." White told NME: "A lot of times when I start a new session with people I'll bring a cover. This was the first time with the all-girl band, and it just turned into something really big and it was like, 'I guess we should put it on the record.'"
  • Amongst the singers in the all-girl backing band is Ruby Amanfu (of "Love Interruption" feature).
  • The song's music video was directed by Dori Oskowitz, who also helmed Kesha's "Take It Off" and Passion Pit's "Constant Conversations" clips. The visual features two distinct Jack Whites battling each other in a guitar war.
  • Rockabilly band The Blasters did a version of the song on their second album (also called The Blasters) in 1981. They released it as a single, with "No Other Girl" as the B-side. The song didn't chart, but it's been a fan favorite ever since.
