Songfacts®:

  • Jaden Smith has achieved a great deal for someone so young. From starring in movies, to appearing on magazine covers, starting his own clothing/lifestyle brand (MSFTSrep) and releasing his debut album. Jaden Smith truly feels like an Icon.

What you call an icon livin'?
Start a record label, MSFTS just did it (Woo)
    Nylon cover, five minutes, whoa
We up too hot in the business (Woo)
'Bout to make a movie independent (Woo)
    Need new trucks, Independent (Woo)

Smith told Genius: "I think what it means to be an icon is being able to take extreme amounts of hate. And extreme amounts of people saying they don't f--k with you. The only reason they receive that hate is because they do things that other people don't do. You know, like Jimi Hendrix lighting guitars on fire. It's like, 'Wow!' Like no one does this. This is very strange. We haven't seen this. He's officially an icon 'cause we don't understand."
  • Jaden Smith debuted this song when he opened Fall Out Boy's concert at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio on October 20, 2017.
  • The song's music video features Jaden decked out in grills and gold chains dancing in front of a Porsche with a mountain view in the background.
  • To celebrate "Icon" reaching the milestone of 100 million streams on Spotify, Will Smith hilariously recreated his son's video complete with gold rope chains, bleach-blonde hair and grill in front of a car parked in a field. We especially love Will's attempt to replicate his son's moonwalk in white socks and slippers.
