Songfacts®:

  • "Thorns" finds Jelly Roll doing something he's made a second career out of: rummaging through the emotional junk drawer of his past, pulling out the bent nails and broken glass, and assembling them into a love song. Released on February 13, 2026 - strategically timed for Valentine's Day and romantically aimed squarely at his wife, Bunnie Xo - the track flips the long-standing rock proverb of "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" on its head. Instead of lamenting that beauty inevitably comes with pain, Jelly proposes the far more optimistic notion that even the thorn might someday stumble into its own rose, provided it's patient and moderately house-trained.
  • Jelly casts himself as jagged, defensive, and bad for anyone who gets too close, while Bunnie is painted as the gardener who decided he was worth tending anyway. The verses peer back into his pre-domesticated years, when he admits he "burned the wick at both ends of the candle." That chaos is contrasted with the calm he discovered after meeting Bunnie, echoing the bruised gratitude that powered songs like "Save Me, " where survival itself felt like a plot twist.
  • The song slots neatly into Jelly's ongoing catalogue of redemption narratives. It feels like a companion piece to the hard-won vulnerability of "Son Of A Sinner," another track where he framed himself as a man permanently aware of his own rough edges but cautiously hopeful that love might sand them down a little.
  • The timing of the release doubles as a public thank-you note. Jelly had teased the song earlier in a birthday tribute to Bunnie, describing her as fearless, bold, and the structural steel of the household.
  • Jelly co-wrote the song with Rocky Block, Charlie Handsome, Ilsey Juber and Taylor Philips. All four of his collaborators are frequent songwriting partners.

Rocky Block is credited as a co-writer on three tracks from Jelly Roll's 2024 Beautifully Broken album. Morgan Wallen, Cody Johnson, Cole Swindell are among the other artists who've cut his songs.

Handsome, who also co-produced the track with Ben Johnson, previously worked with Jelly on "I'm Good," recorded for the animated film GOAT. His resumé also includes multiple credits on Post Malone and Morgan Wallen tracks.

Ilsey Juber co-wrote multiple tracks on Beautifully Broken and was also Jelly Roll's duet partner on the song "When The Drugs Don't Work."

Taylor Philips' previous Jelly Roll credits include "I Am Not Okay" and "Liar."
  • "Thorns" leans toward the gentler side of Jelly's catalogue, easing away from his occasional rock-heavier tendencies in favor of a slow-burn ballad that lets him stretch into his upper vocal register. It's a reminder that behind the tattoos, gravel, and outlaw backstory lurks a crooner who's fond of melody.
