Songfacts®:

  • Joseph Akinwale Akinfenwa-Donus is a Nigerian Afro-pop and R&B singer-songwriter who performs under the name of Joeboy. Following the success of songs such as "Beginning," which hit #1 on Apple Music in Nigeria and Uganda, he released his debut album, Somewhere Between Beauty & Magic, on February 4, 2021. This song is Joeboy's response to his newfound fame.
  • The first verse finds Joeboy celebrating his successes with alcohol, but once we get to the chorus, he's drinking to block out the stress that came along with his blow up.

On the second verse, Joeboy laments the problems he's facing and the "bad men" he has to deal with. During the chorus, he continues to "sip my alcohol" to take his mind off all this negativity.

Joeboy explained that after the busy buildup to the release of Somewhere Between Beauty & Magic, he desperately craved some peace and quiet. As he reflected and looked forward to the next stage of his career, he indulged, sometimes much too frequently, "in certain vices that have kept my mind at ease."
