Loggins spoke about the song's meaning in a 1991 interview with Good Morning America
's Joan Lunden. He said, "At a certain point you have to realize that what you're doing in separating is actually in the best interest of the children. A lot of people think if they stay together, they're staying together for the children, which I think is not necessarily true because if there's no love there, and if you've gone as far as you can with that relationship, what you're teaching the children is more detrimental than staying together. You're teaching them that there's no such thing as love, that relationship is jail. We're the model for their relationships."
Cody didn't share his dad's opinion and blamed him for the split. They were estranged for a time until Kenny wrote "The One That Got Away
" about the situation.
