Songfacts®:

  • "Tonight" opens with a few gentle bars of piano that lead into Kesha soulfully proclaiming that "tonight is the best night of our lives." Before the one-minute mark, the track transforms from a heartfelt pop ballad to a club-ready hip-hop ode to a wild night out. Kesha sings of smuggling a bottle of wine in her friend Chelsea's backpack and stepping out in the same shoes as Elton John. Despite losing her phone, the singer ensures she and her girlfriends do indeed have "the best night of our lives."
  • Kesha wrote the song with LA-based singer/songwriter Wrabel and Canadian producer Ajay "Stint" Bhattacharyya (the lattermost also produced the track). The two also served as the pop star's partners-in-crime on High Road's lead single "Raising Hell."
  • Halfway through the song there's a random chorus that's sung in the wrong key. Kesha explained to The Independent she did this intentionally, "to evoke a joyous, drunken singalong."
  • After performing the song on Live with Kelly and Ryan's annual Live After the Oscars show, Kesha explained "Tonight" was based on an actual night out with model Cara Delevingne. She said their wild night climaxed with the pair getting matching tattoos.
