  • "Killeagh" takes its name from a small village of around 600 people in East County Cork, Ireland. The song is a musical love letter to a close-knit community where everyone knows their neighbors and namechecks local landmarks, including the woods of Glenbower and the River Dissour.

"There's something really poetic about that, about finding an anthem in such a small place," Kingfishr frontman Eddie Keogh told RTÉ.
  • Guitarist Eoin Fitzgibbon grew up playing hurling for Killeagh GAA. When in mid-2024, his former coach, Phillip O'Neill, asked him to write a team anthem, Fitzgibbon agreed, though only on the condition that the junior team reached the East Cork final, a feat the club hadn't pulled off since 2001.

Fitzgibbon admitted to Apple Music that he originally agreed "begrudgingly," calling the arrangement "kind of half a joke" and "a drunken bet I made."
  • The junior Killeagh team did make the final, so the band used a spare half-hour in the studio to knock the track out. Keogh asked Fitzgibbon, "What are the things in Killeagh?" The answer was short and simple: "There's a river, there's a woods, there's a pub and there's a GAA pitch."

"There was no intention or grand scheme of what we wanted to do with it," Keogh told RTÉ. "It was a favor for one of Fitz's friends, basically."
  • The Killeagh junior hurlers sang the track before the final for motivation and went on to win it. Kingfishr recorded their own version in November 2024, releasing it on December 6 as the B-side to "Bet On Beauty."

The song blew up on TikTok, where its simple, singalong chorus caught fire far beyond County Cork. After a boost over St. Patrick's Day, it was serviced to Irish radio on March 28 and climbed all the way to #1 on the Irish Singles Chart in May.
  • The band almost kept the song under wraps. Fitzgibbon initially thought, "This is just about my club," while Keogh admitted there was plenty of "hemming and hawing" over whether anyone outside the village would care.
  • "Killeagh" was the first track by an Irish act to top the domestic chart since Hozier's "Too Sweet" a year earlier. It spent 17 non-consecutive weeks at #1, falling just one week short of the record set by Bill Whelan's "Riverdance."

Keogh credits its success to stepping away from trying to make every song sound massive and cinematic. "It's the stories that's closest to us that people really want to hear about," he noted.
  • The chorus was kept intentionally simple. Keogh compared its repetitive hook to "Baby Shark," recalling that while singing it in the studio, he realized even a child could sing along to "Killeagh." As he put it, "It doesn't get much simpler than that."
