  • The son of a US Army Air Corps officer (later a US Air Force Major General), Kris Kristofferson joined the Army and achieved the rank of Captain. He later became a helicopter pilot after receiving flight training at Fort Rucker, Alabama but gave up a military career in 1965 to pursue songwriting. On this song he recalls a scene witnessed from the air, while flying helicopters over the Gulf of Mexico.
