Songfacts®:

  • "First Light" is the title theme for the video game 007 First Light, developed by IO Interactive. Lana Del Rey wrote and produced the track alongside veteran Bond composer David Arnold - a man who has spent more time scoring espionage than most spies spend actually spying. It marks the first time a Bond video game has featured a full title song in the grand tradition of the film franchise.
  • Arnold previously composed the scores for five consecutive James Bond films: Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), The World Is Not Enough (1999), Die Another Day (2002), Casino Royale (2006) and Quantum of Solace (2008). He is the first composer since John Barry to become a repeat fixture in the franchise. In Bond terms, that's less a résumé and more a long-term posting.
  • "First Light" doesn't tamper with the Bond formula. It opens with moody piano and strings before blooming into brassy, dramatic flourishes; the sort of arrangement that practically insists on a tuxedo. Del Rey takes on the role of the secret agent's admirer who observes him putting himself in harm's way with the sultry confidence of a classic Bond girl.
  • The title "First Light" nods to both the dawn of Bond's origin story and the opening lines:

    Run into the sun like
It's the first light of day when you wake
Is it real or is it fake?

The lyric threads into a larger motif running through the song - life as a performance watched by others, with the chorus later asking "Will you play your life like a game?" - framing the young recruit's story as one of identity under pressure: who is this man, and what will he become?

This is not the first time Lana Del Rey has drawn on the Icarus myth to frame a reckless male subject. On her 2025 single "Henry, Come On," she sings:

You were born to be the one
To hold the hand of the man
Who flies too close to the sun

In that song, Lana casts herself as the reluctant witness to someone else's self-destruction. In "First Light," she shifts position, now addressing Bond directly as the man hurtling toward the flame, the chorus warning:

Can't say I'm surprised to see you running towards the sun
Like a moth to a flame
  • For Del Rey, the track closes a long-running near-miss with the franchise. She previously wrote "24" for the Bond film Spectre, though producers ultimately went with "Writing's On The Wall," by Sam Smith, which went on to win the Academy Award. At the time, Del Rey quipped to the BBC she'd keep doing her "little Nancy Sinatra thing every now and then and just pretend that it's the title track."

Speculation that Del Rey had finally landed an official Bond theme began in October 2025, when "First Light" was registered with ASCAP under her birth name, Elizabeth Grant.
