Songfacts®:

  • In this song, the soul singer Lee Fields takes the voice of an alcoholic who has lots of work to do to get his life in order. "It's about anybody realizing they've got some issues," he told Songfacts. "In this case, this guy's having issues with alcohol, but it could be any kind of substance abuse, and they realize they gotta go in and get some help."

Fields adds that it is not autobiographical. "I write about people in general. Trust me. My life is too boring."
