Songfacts®:

  • Lenny Kravitz is a man of faith, and he often expresses it in his songs. "Spirit In My Heart" is one example.

"That's a really special song, because it's a love letter to God," he said in an interview with Billboard. "It's thanking God and giving [Him] all the due for everything in my life, acknowledging God's presence in my life."

Other Lenny Kravitz songs about God include "Are You Gonna Go My Way" and "Believe." And then there's "God Gave Me Everything," a song he co-wrote with Mick Jagger that appears on Jagger's 2001 album Goddess In The Doorway.
  • According to Kravitz, this song came to him in a dream. "I felt like I was getting somebody else's mail," he said.
  • Kravitz played most of the instruments on this one himself, including castanets and claves, which he used to supplement the drum machine he programmed. Kravitz also wrote and produced the song himself, which he typically does.
  • Kravitz released "Spirit In My Heart" on his album Blue Electric Light just a few days before he turned 60. He recorded the album at his studio in the Bahamas, starting during the pandemic when he got stuck there (we can think of worse places to be stranded). His approach to songwriting is to open his heart and absorb the vibes, letting the songs play out as they may.
