Songfacts®:

  • Imagine, if you will, a modern-day sermon, except instead of a pulpit, we have Lisa, Doja Cat, and Raye delivering the gospel of "Born Again." And the message? Thou shalt not take thy lover for granted - lest ye miss out on heaven on Earth.
  • Lisa leads the charge, offering sultry, celestial vocals, while Doja Cat swoops in with a sermon in rap form, and Raye brings the choir-like harmonies. The trio weave religious imagery into their message, making it abundantly clear that their no-good exes could have been "born again" believers through the sheer power of their affection - if only they'd put in a little effort.
  • The trio are hardly the first to pull off this divine metaphor. Music history is filled with songs that mix romance and religious transformation:

"With You I'm Born Again" – Billy Preston & Syreeta (1979)
A gentle hymn to love's ability to redeem and restore the soul.

    "Hallelujah" – Leonard Cohen (1984)
Though often misinterpreted as purely religious, this song references King David and Bathsheba, to explore the highs and lows of love.

    "Like A Prayer" – Madonna (1989)
Love as a divine experience, complete with a choir that makes even the most skeptical among us consider conversion.

"Personal Jesus" – Depeche Mode (1989)
Ever wanted a lover who makes you feel saved, sanctified, and spiritually fulfilled? This one's for you.

"Take Me to Church" – Hozier (2013)
Hozier uses church imagery as a metaphor for a passionate relationship.

"Holy" – Justin Bieber feat. Chance the Rapper (2020)
Proof that Bieber went from teen heartthrob to full-fledged evangelist of love.
  • "Born Again" had a bit of a resurrection. Originally leaked in demo form when Raye parted ways with her former label, it was later polished into a star-studded revival. With writing credits from Anthony Rossomando (of Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper's "Shallow" fame) and producer Andrew Wells (who also worked with Raye on her 2021 single "Call On Me"), it was only a matter of time before the high-energy pop track found its congregation.
  • And if the song wasn't already rich with religious overtones, the music video - directed by Bardia Zeinali (Sabrina Carpenter, Tate McRae, Kacey Musgraves), - seals the deal. With a neo-noir aesthetic and nods to powerful women throughout history, it's less Sunday school and more cathedral of cool.
  • "Born Again" is the fourth single from Lisa's solo album Alter Ego. It continues the theme of empowerment and transformation of her earlier releases "Rockstar," "New Woman," and "Moonlit Floor."
  • The video won Best K-Pop at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards. Doja Cat opened the show with a performance of "Jealous Type."
