Songfacts®:

  • "Dark To Light" is Louis Tomlinson's tribute to his late One Direction bandmate Liam Payne, who died on October 16, 2024, after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina, at age 31. Tomlinson recorded the song for his third album, How Did I Get Here?.
  • For Tomlinson, Payne's death reopened wounds that were never fully healed. He had already lost his mother, Johannah Deakin, to leukemia in 2016, and his younger sister Félicité to an accidental overdose in 2019; grief that previously fueled songs like "Two of Us," and the brittle sadness threaded through his album Walls. But this loss hit differently. "I naively thought that at this point, I'm well versed in grief... That was super-naive," he explained to Steven Bartlett on The Diary of A CEO. "I've never lost a friend."
  • The "Dark To Light" title is lifted from Payne's chest tattoo that read "Where dark meets lighT"(capital T included). He got it in 2023 at London's Certified Letter Boy studio after opening up about sobriety and mental health struggles. In Tomlinson's hands, that phrase shifts from affirmation to question: where does the dark end, and what happens if the light doesn't quite show up on time?
  • The song explores several layers of grief: survivor's guilt, the desire for one more moment, the question of whether seeing oneself through a loved one's eyes might have made a difference, and the commitment to eternal remembrance.

"It certainly is one of the songs on the record that, pretty much every time I hear it, there'll be a moment where I get goosebumps and drift off in my head and have a little think about it," Tomlinson told Zane Lowe of the track.

He added that the song would be difficult to perform live, but insisted it mattered too much not to try. "It feels like a very authentic snapshot to my love."
  • Tomlinson wrote "Dark To Light" toward the end of a three-to-four-week recording stint in Santa Teresa, Costa Rica, in early 2025. The song began with roughly five pages of raw lyrical notes sent to co-writer Dave Gibson, who joined remotely via Zoom, a setup Tomlinson usually dislikes, though he praised Gibson for making it work. Gibson suggested the "Dark To Light" framing, which Tomlinson initially worried sounded cliché. Instead, it became what he later called "one of my prouder moments on the record."

Gibson, a Scottish singer-songwriter based in Los Angeles since 2015, was a fitting collaborator. He'd experienced significant personal loss himself, which gave the sessions a shared emotional shorthand.
  • The track was produced by Nicolas Rebscher (Aurora's "Running with the Wolves," Ella Henderson's "Filthy Rich"), a Berlin-based producer who worked on Tomlinson's second album, Faith In The Future. Rebscher handled much of the instrumentation (keyboards, guitars, percussion) and added background vocals.
  • The song's title and themes echo "Through The Dark," a track from One Direction's 2013 album Midnight Memories that was co-written by Tomlinson and Payne along with Jamie Scott and Toby Smith. Where that earlier track offered reassurance, this one exists after the holding is no longer possible. It functions as an unintended bookend to their shared writing history.
  • Placed as track 8 on the 12-song How Did I Get Here?, "Dark To Light" provides a necessary shadow on an album Tomlinson has described as intentionally bright. "A lot of light, not much shade," was the plan, but grief, as he noted, doesn't respect tracklists. Even though much of the album was written before Payne's death, the loss seeped in afterward. "How can you write a love song," Tomlinson asked, "when you're feeling the feelings that you're feeling?"
