Songfacts®:

  • Maisie Peters composed this song in the aftermath of a breakup. She tackles her negative thoughts about her body and how she compared herself to her ex's new girl.
  • Peters delves into the process of analyzing everything she said and did and wonders if she could have changed anything, "It's a song about insecurity and vulnerability, about giving a lot of yourself away to someone who decides they don't want it anymore and knowing where to go from there," said the singer.
  • Peters released "Body Better" as the lead single from her sophomore record on January 27, 2023, via Gingerbread Man Records/Elektra. "It is irrational and embarrassing and painfully honest, and it is also one of my favorite things I've ever made," she said, "and felt like the only true and right way to start this album off."
  • During a fan Q+A, Peters revealed that "Body Better" is one of three tracks on the album that she's nicknamed "The Trauma Trio."
  • Maisie Peters co-wrote "Body Better" with Ines Dunn and the song's producer Matias Téllez. Dunn also helped Mimi Webb write her hit single "House On Fire." Norwegian producer Matias Tellez co-produced Girl In Red's debut album If I Could Make It Go Quiet.
  • Tellez played most of the instruments on the song: synthesizer, piano, guitar, bass, cello, percussion and drums (the latter with Jack Geary). The only other musician is Joel Peat, who contributed pedal steel guitar.
