Born in Astoria, Queens, New York, Melanie Martinez was raised in a working-class household by her parents, Mery and Jose Martinez, who are of Dominican and Puerto Rican heritage. The family later moved to Long Island, where she spent most of her childhood and adolescence.
Martinez attended Plaza Elementary School in Baldwin, where her musical education began early. "We always had music lessons in Baldwin," she told the Long Island Herald in 2012. "When I was in kindergarten at Plaza, Mr. Nadien pushed us in the right direction. He taught me singing and to play the recorder. I remember he made a Christmas CD with us, and that was exciting."

She later attended Baldwin High School and opted not to pursue college, choosing instead to focus on music full-time.
As a teenager, Martinez competed on the MSG Varsity Talent Show, performing Motown classics and Beatles songs before being eliminated in the second round. Her first major breakthrough came on season 3 of The Voice, where she turned three chairs with a dreamy, slowed-down take on Britney Spears' "Toxic"; she selected Adam Levine as her coach. Her battle-round performance was "Lights" by Ellie Goulding, and she advanced to the Top 6 before being eliminated during the fifth week of live shows.
Following the show, Martinez released her breakout single, "Dollhouse," and the Dollhouse EP in 2014. These were followed by her debut concept album, Cry Baby (2015), which was certified multi-platinum and introduced a narrative persona used to explore vulnerability, abuse, and self-discovery. She expanded the storyline with K-12 (2019) and completed the trilogy with Portals (2023), which marked a dramatic visual and thematic shift. By the mid-2020s, Martinez had established herself as a pop auteur with a fiercely devoted fanbase.
Martinez wrote, directed, and starred in the feature-length film accompanying K-12, extending the Cry Baby universe into a pastel-colored, nightmarish school setting that mirrors the album's themes.
She is recognized for her distinctive appearance, often sporting pastel hair colors, theatrical makeup and exaggerated, doll-like styling. During the Portals era, Martinez adopted elaborate prosthetics and creature design, signaling a symbolic move away from her human form. Her fashion blends vintage children's clothing, gothic influences, fantasy elements, and avant-garde couture, treating wardrobe as part of the narrative rather than simple image-building.
Outside of music, Martinez throws herself into visual art and planning: she storyboards and costume-designs her own videos, and has spoken about painting, embroidery, and poetry/photography projects as personal passions.
