Oh Death

Songfacts®:

  • MercyMe's "O Death" is a defiant and liberating track, highlighting how death has been well and truly beaten by Jesus' resurrection.
  • The song originated with country star Walker Hayes (yes, the "Fancy Like" guy) sending MercyMe frontman Bart Millard a bare-bones demo with just voice and acoustic guitar. Millard's first reaction? A weary "No, thanks" in capital letters. But the chorus wouldn't leave him alone. When he nervously shared it with his bandmates and label, expecting shrugs, the response was unanimous: this was the single. Millard admitted it stung a little that everyone loved the song right away, but he quickly came round.
  • The timing of the song was uncanny. Millard's father-in-law Frank - who had been both his second-grade Sunday school teacher and a lifelong father figure - was dying of leukemia. Far from despairing, Frank embraced the news with astonishing joy. He even took his funeral suit to the dry cleaners himself, quipping, "This is for my wedding, I'm going to the wedding banquet." He heard "O Death" shortly before he passed away, making the song's victory dance over mortality feel deeply personal for the band.
  • Released on January 24, 2025 as the lead single from Wonder & Awe, "O Death" is quirky, upbeat, and strangely comforting. A remixed version featuring Hayes as guest vocalist followed on May 9, 2025, giving the track an extra layer of crossover appeal.
  • A troubling thought that the modern church has lost its sense of awe for God sparked the theme of the Wonder & Awe album. "We've seen behind the curtain so much," Millard told the I Love That Song podcast. "We're not amazed anymore."

Millard confessed that his ADHD keeps him looking toward "the next thing," but writing the tracks for Wonder & Awe forced him to slow down, take stock, and remember to be astonished again.
