Songfacts®:

  • Lambert explained this acoustic country swing number, which was inspired by a 1980 Merle Haggard song: "I've been obsessed with Airstreams for a while now. I don't really know why. Don't have one, don't need one. But I want one! I always do 'The Way I Am' by Merle in my show, if I have an encore, just because I love that song, and it's not right not to play a Merle song on stage. I was telling Blake (Shelton) one day, 'There's a song missing that I haven't written yet.' He said, 'Why don't you go write "The Way I Am" for you?' And I did. That song is definitely, what if I wasn't doing this? What if I could just fly away out of my body for a day?"
  • "Airstream Song" is an anthem about the itch to escape and the joy of taking the road less traveled. Lambert uses the Airstream as a metaphor for the boundless freedom and wild adventure life on the open road delivers – classic Lambert territory.
  • It's not just the freedom the Airstream brings that Lambert loves about the iconic recreational vehicle trailer. Speaking to Billboard about why she named her fifth album Platinum, Lambert said: "Platinum is a lot of things: It's hair, it's diamonds and platinum, it's Bud Light Platinum, it's the color of an Airstream."
  • Lambert co-wrote "Airstream Song" with one of her go-to songwriting partners, Natalie Hemby, for her Revolution album. They also co-penned "White Liar," "Only Prettier" and "Virginia Bluebell" (with Jennifer Kennard) for Revolution.
  • Just a year after Miranda Lambert cranked out "Airstream Song," Shelby Lynne revved up her own tribute to the travel trailer brand. In "Something To Be Said," featured on her Tears, Lies, and Alibis album, Lynne hits the open road in her "rolling home made out of silver."
