Songfacts®:

  • On "Stargazing," Myles Smith sings of feeling destined to be with his romantic interest. When they're together, he's completely absorbed in a beautiful moment with her, just like we get lost in the beauty of the night sky.
  • Smith got the inspiration for "Stargazing" while hanging out in LA. "I love the idea that the person we fall in love with has been there our whole life," he said.
  • Smith didn't craft the song alone. He teamed up with Peter Fenn, who not only produced the track but also laid down all the instruments himself: piano, drums, keyboards, guitar, the whole shebang.

Jesse Fink, a New York songwriter with credits on John Legend's "Conversations in the Dark," Justus Bennetts' "Bad Day" and Artemas' "I Like the Way You Kiss Me," also helped write the song.
  • "Stargazing" is Smith's first single since his debut EP, You Promised a Lifetime. Released via Sony Music on May 10, 2024, it became the Luton native's first UK Top 20 single when it debuted at #12.
  • "Stargazing" was birthed when Smith was with the people he loved in a space that he loved. He wrote it in Malibu in January 2024. It was his first time there, and he found it distinctly different from the English town of Luton where he grew up. Smith was with Jesse Fink and Peter Fenn, and had just signed a new record deal with RCA Records. "I wanted to write something warm, fun and happy," he told Billboard.

Smith came up with the hook in a flash, and creativity was buzzing. "It was just us jumping around, about day five into writing - looking at each other with guitars and having the time of our lives," said the singer.

The song's core idea emerged: The people and things we love are always present, even if we don't always recognize it. Sometimes, a moment of realization washes over us, bringing a wave of euphoria. "Stargazing" captures that feeling of blissful understanding.
  • The song's title, "Stargazing," came about just as unexpectedly as the inspiration. "It was getting late in Malibu, and we're looking over at the ocean and the sun setting, and in that beautiful moment, I stood there and it was quite cathartic," Smith told Billboard. "I was like, "Damn, I'm doing the thing that I've really wanted to be doing while looking at this beautiful night sky setting." We were like, "Oh snap, is this what it's called?" We threw the word in and it found its life there."
  • "Stargazing" topped Billboard's Pop Airplay, Adult Pop Airplay and Alternative Airplay charts. It was the first debut hit by a British soloist to reach #1 on all three radio formats.
  • "Stargazing" won the PRS for Music Most Performed Work at the 2025 Ivor Novello Awards. Smith, alongside co-writers Peter Fenn and Jesse Fink, was presented the award at the ceremony held at Grosvenor House, London, on May 22, 2025.
