Songfacts®:

  • Niall Horan goes yacht rock on "Boys Are Fun," a song he wrote with a team that includes his producers, Julien Bunetta and John Ryan.

"We wrote it in Soho in London, and we'd had a few drinks at this point," he explained on Off The Record. We always wanted to lean into a bit of a Yacht Rock. We were giving it a good crack. I was doing a bit of a Michael McDonald impression that turned into one of my favorite songs on the record. I'd spent so much time writing very serious songs, and I felt like, 'Right, let's just pick up guitars and yacht rock this and see what comes out.'"
  • The song is part of Horan's album Dinner Party, which started with the title track where he recalls the soirée where he met his girlfriend, Mia. The song brings some levity to the album, which deals a lot with major life events like the death of Horan's One Direction bandmate Liam Payne.
