Songfacts®:

  • Pheelz is a Nigerian record producer and singer-songwriter who broke through internationally with this Afro-fusion hit.
  • According to the Songfacts dictionary, the word "finesse" means "subtlety of contrivance," or "an endeavor by a player holding a higher card to take the trick with a lower." Here, Pheelz and guest singer Bnxn talk about their carefree lifestyle and using finesse to win over ladies.
  • The song originated in the studio in early February 2022 during a training session with a newly signed producer, Miichkel (MikeGoCrazy). The young beatmaker started messing with a guitar loop for "Finesse," which Pheelz thought sounded good, so he left him for a while to develop it. By the time Pheelz returned to the studio, MikeGoCrazy had completed the beat. Impressed with his track, Pheelz came up with a melody and added Pidgin lyrics and layers to the chorus.

Pheelz shared a snippet on TikTok and other social media platforms that same night. When Bnxn came across the video he hit him up, so the producer asked him for a verse, and his fellow Nigerian artist came through.
  • The Riidiimacool label released "Finesse" on March 3, 2022. The song immediately topped the Apple Music charts in 11 countries, including Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Uganda. Its international success earned Pheelz a record deal with Warner.
  • During the chorus, Finesse talks about how he doesn't care about going broke as long as he has a girl to share the night with.

If I broke na my business

The lyric spawned the #FolakeChallenge on TikTok, where users depict how to finesse during tricky financial situations.
  • Other artists that have released songs about their finesse with the ladies include Bruno Mars and Drake. Furthermore, Lil Durk tells us how he finessed out the gang way.
