Songfacts®:

  • Prince's then-wife Mayte Garcia was pregnant with his son during the recording of this song. He used the heartbeat from the baby's ultrasound on the backing track. In his first TV interview, the singer told Oprah what it was like when he first heard the sound:
"It really grounds you, it makes you realize that things you thought wee important aren't really. That's what it meant to me."

Sadly, the baby - named Boy Gregory - died from a rare genetic condition called Pfeiffer's syndrome a week after his birth.
  • The original title of this song was "Conception."
