Songfacts®:

  • In the 2003 remastered version of Good Old Boys, Newman explains that this song is based on a true story as told to him by a friend who was a public defender. A woman had her purse snatched by a naked man running down the street. Police found a naked guy a few blocks away with her purse, but he insisted that he didn't take the purse, but that another naked man handed it to him. The guy's excuse for why he was naked: he was having an affair with his friend's wife, and when his friend came home, he fled out the fire escape and didn't have time to put his clothes on. It didn't hold up in court, and the guy was convicted.
