Songfacts®:

  • Rick Ross gets personal on this track, where he talks about what is important for him in his life and some of his regrets. He opens the song by stating states that the two things that mean the most to him are being someone his neighborhood could respect, and a son that his mama could be proud of.

Just being somebody that the neighborhood respected
And my mama could be proud of, was the apple of my eye
That's all I ever wanted, just being something, man
  • "Apple of my eye" is an English idiom, which comes from the Old Testament book of Deuteronomy 32:10. It refers to God guarding Moses and the Israelites in the desert like a person protects the pupil of his eye. (The pupil was formally believed to be a round, solid ball like an apple).

He kept him as the apple of His eye.

The phrase came to apply to any very precious or much loved person or thing. It has widely been used in pop culture, most notably in Stevie Wonder's tribute to his wife Syreeta, "You Are The Sunshine Of My Life" where he sang:

You are the sunshine of my life,
That's why I'll always stay around, mmm mmm yeah yeah
You are the apple of my eye,
Forever you'll stay in my heart
  • Ross expresses his view during the song that America has reached the end of the line with the election of Donald Trump as president and the country needs to start over:

I'm happy that Donald Trump became the president
Because we have to destroy it to elevate.

He explained the lyric to Billboard magazine: "This is the bottom. We will start over after this. I think that particular line, a lot of young brothers who haven't really put a finger on how they feel about our new president, I think they needed to hear that line to get some form of understanding."
  • Ross also divulges in the song that he once warned his MMG signee Meek Mill not to date Nicki Minaj, following his breakup with the Queen Barbz. He advises.

    I told Meek I wouldn't trust Nicki
Instead of beefing with your dog you just give him some distance

Speaking on The Joe Budden Podcast, Minaj accused Ross of disrespecting her in order to sell more copies of his Rather You Than Me record.

Minaj explained that back in 2016 she visited the White House with Ross who was the label boss of her then-boyfriend Meek Mill. After meeting with Barack Obama, Ross texted Mill bigging up Minaj. "I saw the text myself with my own eyes, 'This chick is a keeper,'" she recalled.

The Queens MC added that when Ross came out with his album the next year, he tried to sell it by disrespecting her.
  • Raphael Saadiq croons the hook and the last verse. The former Tony! Toni! Toné! Singer previously linked up with Ross on his 2010 Teflon Don track "All The Money In The World."
