• The song title "Monotonía" translates into English as "monotony" or "tedious." Shakira wrote the bachata track following the very public breakup from her longtime partner and father of her two children, soccer star Gerard Piqué. She blames their demise on the gradual erosion of that initial, joyous connection they had when they first met.

• Shakira released "Monotonía" on October 19, 2022. It was her second single about her breakup with Pique, following "Te Felicito." While "Te Felicito" finds Shakira angry at her ex for not paying her enough attention, in "Monotonía" she accepts that their relationship had run its course.
  
  "I feel like in this moment of my life, which is probably one of the most difficult, darkest hours of my life, music has brought light," Shakira told Elle magazine. "Everything I go through is reflected in the lyrics I write... when the glove fits, it fits."
• Things were much more rosy between Shakira and Pique back in 2017 when she released "Me Enamoré." That song tells the story of how she fell in love with the soccer star on the video shoot for "Waka Waka (This Time For Africa)" back in 2010.
• Shakira duets with the Puerto Rican singer Ozuna on the track. They both lament how their love for each other died.
• Shakira co-directed the video with longtime collaborator Jaume de la Iguana. Filmed on September 10-11, 2022 in Manresa, Spain, it shows a faceless man in a grocery store ripping out her heart. The clothes he's wearing - white hoodie and gray joggers – are similar to an outfit Piqué wore in Shakira's "Me Enamoré" video.
