Songfacts®:

  • Over a buoyant, '80s pop-inflected soundscape, Shania Twain celebrates the euphoria of being in love.

So let's start wakin' up dreamin'
And dress up crazy like superstars
There ain't no shakin' this feelin'
Tonight, we're makin' our way to Mars

Every moment Twain spends with her romantic interest is like a dream.
  • Shania Twain co-penned "Waking Up Dreaming" with Jessica Agombar and David Stewart. Agombar and Stewart first met in 2018 when they formed the London-based DJ/production group Mad Teeth with Yash Sohodeb. The pair have developed a successful songwriting partnership, placing songs with the likes of Jonas Brothers ("What A Man Gotta Do"), Hailee Steinfeld ("I Love You's"), and BTS "Dynamite").
  • Stewart also produced the jaunty track and plays all the instruments (synthesizer, synth bass, keyboards, percussion, drums, electric guitar, acoustic guitar, bass).
  • Twain released "Waking Up Dreaming" on September 23, 2022. It's her debut release on Republic Nashville, where she's the label's flagship artist.
  • Back in 2020 and 2021, Twain sang on Kelsea Ballerini's "Hole In The Bottle" and Ronan Keating's "Forever and Ever, Amen," but "Waking Up Dreaming" is her first solo music in five years, following her 2017 album Now.
  • Director Isaac Rentz (Blink-182, 5 Seconds of Summer, OneRepublic) brings to life the song's living-in-the-moment message and '80s sound in the retro video. During the glam rock visual fantasy, Twain rocks elaborate makeup, wigs, spandex, and multiple outfit changes.

"I've always had control over the way I look in videos," Twain told The Independent, "and in this one, I had a whole lot of fun thinking back to how I was inspired by David Bowie, Prince and Blondie."
