Songfacts®:

  • On Staind's 1999 album, Dysfunction, they have a song called "Home where lead singer Aaron Lewis sings about the lonely life on the road, which was especially acute for him because he was newly married to his wife Vanessa. Two years later on the next Staind album, Break The Cycle, Lewis included a similar song, "Warm Safe Place," where he longs to spend time with Vanessa during their work-related time apart.

Their marriage defied the rock-and-roll odds; the couple stayed together and had three children. When Staind toured for the album, Vanessa came along to record footage of the shows.
  • The Break The Cycle album really connected with fans. Aaron Lewis was a different kind of rock star, singing about his childhood traumas and missing his wife as opposed to boasting about his exploits or celebrating rock and roll. Through the darkness of the music he found light, and so did many listeners. The album spent three weeks at #1 and sold over 5 million copies in America. Staind got diminishing returns on their next albums, but in 2012 Lewis launched a successful solo career as a country artist.
