Songfacts®:

  • This was chosen as the theme song for HBO's music industry drama series Vinyl, which is set in the late 1970s. "We cast a wide net. It had to serve a larger purpose than something that was just episodic. It's not that it serves as a narrative," the show's co-music supervisor Randall Poster said of selecting Vinyl's theme song. "Sturgill just captured this spirit of rock 'n' roll. It feels classic and contemporary."
  • A "sugar daddy" is a rich middle-aged or elderly man who lavishes expensive gifts on a much younger woman. The expression is of US origin and is derived from slang sugar "money" and colloquial daddy "father".
  • Other songs about sugar daddys include:

    "Sugar Daddy" by Tom Jones

    "Sugah Daddy" by D'Angelo

"Mmm Papi" by Britney Spears (Britney, who co-wrote this song, sings here about her love for a sugar daddy.)

"Loverboy" by Mariah Carey (Carey sings here about a sugar daddy taking care of her. She was married to Sony executive Tommy Mottola from 1993-1998.)
