Songfacts®:

  • On "Scorsese Baby Daddy," SZA admits to being "addicted to the drama" in relationships. And yet, beneath the storm of tangled emotions, she aches for something real, a connection that might anchor her amid the whirlwind.
  • The title, of course, is a nod to Martin Scorsese, director of gritty movies like Taxi Driver, Goodfellas and The Wolf of Wall Street that are populated by volatile characters. By invoking Scorsese, SZA casts herself as a woman drawn to danger. The phrase "Scorsese baby daddy" is a plea for an adrenaline rush wrapped in a leather jacket.
  • It's not all theatrical chaos. SZA weaves in moments of introspection, showing us a glimpse of the woman behind the drama. "One day, I'll understand all that it takes to be a lady," she sings, as she tries to cut herself some slack.
  • SZA wrote the song alongside its producers, Tyler Johnson, Tyler Page, Owen Stoutt, and Michael Uzowuru.

Tyler Johnson is a record producer and songwriter based in Los Angeles. He's best known for his work with Harry Styles, helming 12 out of the 13 tracks on his album Harry's House.

Tyler Page co-produced six tracks of Vince Staples 2024 album Dark Times.

Owen Stoutt is a Los Angeles-based audio engineer.

Michael Uzowuru is a record producer and songwriter who has collaborated with such artists as Frank Ocean, Halsey and Rosalía. His other SZA credits include "Diamond Boy (DTM)" and "Another Life."
