• T-Pain is best known for his innovations in Auto-Tune, using the pitch-correction software to manipulate his vocals. The software was introduced in 1997 but was a bit of an industry secret because it was used to compensate for sub-standard singing. In 1999, it started showing up as a vocal effect (done by using an extreme setting), which T-Pain heard on the Dark Child remix of the 1999 Jennifer Lopez hit "If You Had My Love."
  
  He went on a quest to find the effect, getting every vocal plug-in he could find. It took him about a year, but he finally figured it out, and when he did, he used Auto-Tune to give him a signature sound.
• T-Pain first used Auto-Tune on "I'm Sprung," the lead single from his 2005 solo album Rappa Ternt Sanga. This started the ball rolling: rappers and singers started hitting him up for Auto-Tuned production and guest spots, and soon many hip-hop vocals were laced with the effect.
• On the Netflix series This Is Pop, he explained that he went into a four-year depression in 2013, triggered by an unpleasant conversation with Usher. They were on the same flight to the BET Awards when Usher summoned him for a chat and accused him of "ruining music" with Auto-Tune. He took it hard, wondering if Usher was right.
• He got married in 2003 when he was just 18 and far from famous. His wife, Amber Najm, was 22. He credits her with giving him the confidence to slather his songs with Auto-Tune, which was a big risk. When he tried it, many of his industry friends warned him against it, but she liked it, so he gave it a shot. (Said T-Pain: "I was having sex with her so I didn't care what anybody else said"). The couple have three children together.
• T-Pain applies Auto-Tune as he records his vocals, which means he has to manipulate his voice to suit the effect. He says Kayne West does it differently, applying Auto-Tune after his vocals are recorded.
• Jay-Z called him out in his 2009 track "D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune)," rapping: "Y'all singing too much, get back to rap, you T-Pain-ing too much."
  
  Jay was one of the most vocal opponents of Auto-Tune, but that didn't stop a wave of rappers - Lil Wayne, Kanye West, Future - from using it.
• Before going solo, he was in a rap group called Nappy Headz, based in his hometown of Tallahassee, Florida. They released an album in 2002 called Nappatine, which T-Pain produced.
• T-Pain can really sing. He proved it when he performed an NPR Tiny Desk concert in 2014 without using any vocal effects. In 2017, he did an acoustic tour for fans who liked his unembellished voice.
• On November 10, 2024, Pasco Street in his hometown of Tallahassee was renamed T-Pain Lane, and he was given a key to the city, with the mayor lauding his "contributions to music and his ongoing commitment to this community." T-Pain posted: "This honor means so much. There's no T-Pain without Tallahassee."
• T-Pain earned high praise from Ozzy Osbourne with his 2023 cover of "War Pigs," a 1970 heavy metal classic by Ozzy's group Black Sabbath. "This is the best cover of 'War Pigs' ever," Ozzy Tweeted.
