Songfacts®:

  • Folk and country were all in the rage in the early months of 2024 as acoustic instruments replaced the dominance of pop beats. This shift was evident in the Billboard Hot 100 chart dated March 16, 2024. Artists like Teddy Swims ("Lose Control" at #2) and Benson Boone ("Beautiful Things" at #4) found success with soulful vocals and heartfelt lyrics. Even pop royalty like Beyoncé embraced the trend with her country-pop anthem, "Texas Hold 'Em" at #5.

Country collaborations also flourished. "I Remember Everything" by Zach Bryan and Kacey Musgraves sat comfortably at #7, proving the power of blending voices. And of course, the ever-present Taylor Swift claimed a spot at #10 with "Cruel Summer."

Noah Kahan was another beneficiary of the folk-pop surge, with his "Stick Season" just outside the Top 10 at #11.

Released on March 15, 2024, Zayn's "What I Am," followed the musical zeitgeist. His fresh direction is evident in the song's rustic country-folk vibe, a departure from his previous work. This isn't a surprise, considering Zayn collaborated with Nashville-based producer Dave Cobb, known for his work with country/Americana stars like Chris Stapleton and Jason Isbell.
  • "What I Am" explores a turbulent relationship on the brink of collapse. Fueled by absinthe, Zayn grapples with confusion and questions his own sanity for staying involved

The chorus reveals an ultimatum. He demands acceptance of his true self ("Just take me for what I am") but remains stuck ("My two feet are in the sand"). A fleeting attempt to escape the situation with hedonism proves futile. Ultimately, a yearning for connection surfaces.
  • This is the first time Cobb has worked with Zayn. After hearing the unfiltered emotions in Zayn's new material, the Nashville producer was eager to contribute his production expertise.

"What got me about Zayn was his voice, you can hear love, loss, pain, triumph and humanity in it," he told Rolling Stone. "I feel as if this record is removing the glass from his spirit directly to his fans. Zayn has really created his own universe on this record, he really has no fear and is speaking straight from his soul."
  • "What I Am" is the lead single from Zayn's fourth studio album, Room Under the Stairs. The album's artwork shows a silhouette of his face and a blueprint of a house being built.

"I recorded most of it in a tiny little like shoe cabinet in my house," explained Zayn, "so I thought it was fitting to name it after that room so people can get even more sentiment into what the whole idea behind it was."
