  • I've had my share of life's ups and downs
But fate's been kind, the downs have been few
I guess you could say that I've been lucky
Well, I guess you could say that it's all because of you

If anyone should ever write my life story
For whatever reason there might be
Oh, you'll be there between each line of pain and glory
'Cause you're the best thing that ever happened to me
Ah, you're the best thing that ever happened to me

Oh, there have been times when times were hard
But always somehow I made it, I made it through
'Cause for every moment that I've spent hurting
There was a moment that I spent, ah, just loving you

If anyone should ever write my life story
For whatever reason there might be
Oh, you'll be there between each line of pain and glory
'Cause you're the best thing that ever happened to me
Ah, you're the best thing that ever happened to me
I know, you're the best thing, oh, that ever happened to me Writer/s: James D. Weatherly

  • Sherri from ClearwaterOn Feb 14, 2024 I saw Gladys Knight for the first time. At 79 years of age she still looks classy and fabulous. She sang fantastic, hitting the notes just right, maintaining a good pitch in her soulful way with an occasional grawl. It’s hard to believe the hits she performed were 50 years old. They have stood the test of time because the lyrics were so meaningful and music complex with layers of sound. There was a keyboard player, an organist, 2 guitars, two drummers and 3 back up singers. She shared her love and appreciation of our Lord and her fans and made a beautiful connection!
  • Laurie Moore from Roanoke,vaIt's awsome
  • Dt from Key Colony Beach, FlThis song almost always brings a tear to eyes, especially if I've had a couple drinks. Makes me think of my woman, my wife.
  • Bill from Sunshine State FloridaMaybe I can thank Jim Weatherly for causing this, then 13 yar old white boy to have what could maybe be called a crush on Gladys Knight. If I found out she was on TV, I stopped everything else I was doing. I was, and still am, SO in love with that voice.
  • Seventhmist from 7th HeavenBubblesk from Memphis, The word "pip" has several definitions, including a seed in fruit or each of the little spots on dominos, but the usage here probably was "an excellent or very attractive person or thing."
  • Bubblesk from Memphis, TnBack in '73 I loved this song. I was only 8 years old & when I first heard it on the radio, one of my older brothers kept telling me the artists were Gladys Nighty & Her PIMPS! What a jerk! But the thing is, I believed him and kept thinking they were Gladys Night & Her PIMPS. How embarrassing. But I learned more about them & that it wasn't their real name. Absolutely great R&B group. What a long string of top hits! But I have always had a problem with the guy's group name. Pimps or Pips? Pips or Pimps? At least I learned what a PIMP is - still don't know what a PIP is though.
  • Barry from Sauquoit, NyAs stated above Ray Price reached #1 on the country chart with this song, on the pop chart it peaked at #82. The same year {1974} that Gladys released her version, the group The Persauders also released it, they topped out at #85!!!
  • Dimasalang from Manila, PhilippinesThis song was also recorded by Steve Lawrence, a very good one indeed. He even mentioned at the end of the song the name of his wife, Eydie (Gormet).
  • Doug from Oakland, CaJim Weatherly also wrote another beautiful song for Gladys called Between Her Goodbye and My Hello.
  • Kenneth from Cleveland, Ohit's funny how music historians always say Gladys and the PIps had bigger success after Motowwn.oOtown are the ones who paired them with Jim Weatherly!
