  • Well you're a real tough cookie with a long history
Of breaking little hearts like the one in me
That's okay, let's see how you do it
Put up you dukes, let's get down to it

Hit me with your best shot
Why don't you hit me with your best shot
Hit me with your best shot
    Fire away

You come on with it, come on
    You don't fight fair
That's okay, see if I care
Knock me down, it's all in vain
I get right back on my feet again

Hit me with your best shot
Why don't you hit me with your best shot
Hit me with your best shot
    Fire away

Well you're a real tough cookie with a long history
Of breaking little hearts like the one in me
Before I put another notch in my lipstick case
You better make sure you put me in my place

Hit me with your best shot
C'mon, hit me with your best shot
Hit me with your best shot
    Fire away

Hit me with your best shot
Why don't you hit me with your best shot
Hit me with your best shot
    Fire away Writer/s: Edward Schwartz

  • GerryLike Brown Sugar, another great song that succumbs to stupid Politically Correct, just because it ahs the word shot in the title? When all the phrase means something quite different to an actual gunshot? California certainly seems to lobotomize its citizens
  • Angelina from FlI always thought it was talking about doing a shot of drugs I thought you was talking to the dope dealer saying Hit me with your Best shot I thought she was portraying a hooker
  • Stukka63 from HellI’m thinking this kinda of pat travers boom boom out go the lights.
  • Marv Goodman from New York, NyI am the Marv Goodman referred to in this piece, the fellow at Chrysalis and ATV.

An interesting footnote is that I got a call from Jeff Aldrich, head of A&R at the label when they were trying to decide the first single from the "Crimes of Passion" LP. They were torn between "Hit Me" and "Heartbreaker"

I, of course said "Hit Me." And he asked if I elected for that cut only because it was my song. I had been involved in earlier meetings and knew the image the label was trying to project for Ms. Benatar and said while both songs sound like anthems for a powerful woman, "Heartbreaker" really fails in that regard.

Where "Hit Me" presents a woman with grit saying she is every bit the match of would-be tough type, in fact one who could "put another notch on her lipstick case", "Heartbreaker" has lyrics typical of a foolish girl who knows she is heading into a situation with a charmer and pretender, and offering an empty "don't you mess around with me" threat. "Hit Me" was hands down a statement that makes the persona the label wants.

  • Tommy from Ny, NyIn 7th or 8th grade I hade a crush on a girl who was a Pat Benatar fan. In music class the teacher played "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" and thanked the girl for bringing in the album. That was the first I heard about Pat Benatar and have been a fan since.
  • Jose from El Centro, CaGh3 =]
  • Ken from Louisville, KyThis song is obviously about how verbal jabs between men and women can have the same emotional impact as actual physical violence. At the time, if you told someone to "hit me with your best shot", you meant for them to throw their best insult against you, you'll insult them right back.
  • Meredith from Wauwatosa, WiThis song is so sassy and fun! Love it so much!
  • Sebastian from Providence, RiI think Mandy Moore has a song called the same. Or is the same one?
  • Jim from Dayton, OhPat Benatar is a WOMAN. I doubt "his girlfriend" had anything to do with it. Not to mention the facts above clearly explain how the song came to be.
  • Jayson from Herenesate, MsThis song is actually very sexual, Pat Brenatar's girlfriend at the time wrote it for him, hence the title...
  • Morgan from New York, NyThis song is an old favorite of mine it is so special to me!!I love "Hit Me With Your Best Shot"!!It is so cool!!
  • Elliot from St. Louis, MoThis is one of those songs that will be synonomis with the 80's for all eternity. It is pretty catchy, I must admit.
  • Rick from San Juan, United StatesThe guitar riff in the beginning of "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" was used by MTV as its music theme during its launching in 1981 and beyond.
  • Rick from San Juan, United StatesAt the time John Lennon was murdered on December 8, 1980, this song was being played heavily on the radio. Every time I hear it, it reminds me of that horrible day when I first heard the news on our local station WOSO.
  • Candice from Vancouver, CanadaI heard this song in a few Tropicana orange juice commercials.
  • Rob from Santa Monica, CaThis song contains Neil Gerardo's best guitar solo, after "Heartbreaker".
