  • There's a hurricane and it's on the way
Been sittin' around this house for days
I'm in here, waiting on the flood
Been hanging out and holding on
To every word in our favorite song
These headphones are thicker than blood

If I could hitch a ride on a time machine
I would bring you right back here with me
And I wouldn't have to watch you disappear
Even though I said all the things that mattered most
While I held on tight to the end of the rope
I could keep you close, but I couldn't keep you here
A lot can happen in a year

    Giving in, not giving up
    Maybe I didn't care enough
I wish I could let you know somehow

If I could hitch a ride on a time machine
I would bring you right back here with me
And I wouldn't have to watch you disappear
Even though I said all the things that mattered most
While I held on tight to the end of the rope
I could keep you close, but I couldn't keep you here
A lot can happen in a year (year)
A lot can happen in a year (year)
A lot can happen in a year

Keep looking out, not looking down
You won't find the answers in the ground
Where will we be twelve months from now?

If I could hitch a ride on a time machine
I would bring you right back here with me
And I wouldn't have to watch you disappear
Even though I said all the things that mattered most
While I held on tight to the end of the rope
I could keep you close, but I couldn't keep you here
A lot can happen in a year Writer/s: Brent Smith, Eric Bass

  • Lisa from Ashland WiThis song really hits home. I've lost four siblings, and I am the seventh out of eight. I lost one brother in 2013, lost two brothers with 3 months of each other in 2021 and then my sister in 2024.
  • Marko from IndianaCountless reasons why I can’t get this song out of my head but here are a couple I’ll share. First of all, we ALL can relate to loss in our lives which is highlighted in this song it also drives us forward to live each day as it’s our last because it could be. Second of all I love how the band has given us a ‘popier’ side of them and I hope it only grows their fan base of 8-80 years old even more! And finally, the Def Leppard ‘Hysteria’ sound (though I don’t believe intentional) has a nice ‘retro’ feel to it. Great job guys!

Shears does very little promotion, which has kept him secluded from the spotlight. What changed when Cyndi Lauper had a hit with his song? Not much, really.
