  • That old dog has chained you up alright
Give you everything you need to live inside a twisted cage
    Sleep beside an empty rage
I had a dream I was your hero

Damn, I wish I was your lover
I'll rock you till the daylight comes
Make sure you are smiling and warm
    I am everything
Tonight I'll be your mother I will
Do such things to ease your pain
Free your mind and you won't feel ashamed

This monkey can't stand to see you black and blue
Give you something sweet each time you
    Come inside my jungle book
What is it just too good
    Don't say you'll stay
    'Cause then you go away

Damn, I wish I was your lover
I'll rock you till the daylight comes
Make sure you are smiling and warm
    I am everything
Tonight I'll be your mother I will
Do such things to ease your pain
Free your mind and you won't feel ashamed

Shucks for me there is no other
You're the only shoe that fits
I can't imagine I'll grow out of it
Damn, I wish I was your lover

If I was your girl believe me
I'd turn on the Rolling Stones
We could groove along and feel much better
I could do it forever and ever
Give me an hour to kiss you
Walk through heaven's door I'm sure
We don't need no doctor to feel much better
    Let me in
Forever and ever and ever and ever

I sat on the mountainside with peace of mind
I lay by the ocean making love to her with visions clear
Walked for days with no one near
And I return as chained and bound to you

Damn, I wish I was your lover
I'll rock you till the daylight comes
Make sure you are smiling and warm
    I am everything
Tonight I'll be your mother I will
Do such things to ease your pain
Free your mind and you won't feel ashamed

Shucks for me there is no other
You're the only shoe that fits
I can't imagine I'll grow out of it
Damn, I wish I was your lover

    Open up gonna come inside
    I gonna fill you up
    I gonna Make you cry

  • Patricia from CaSo, is Melissa Etheridge singing back up in this song, “Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover”?
  • Camille from Toronto, OhIt's now 2014 and hard to believe this song is 22 years old! I heard it on the car stereo yesterday; it's a song that's stood the test of time and is just as fabulous to listen to as it was in its heyday. I re-read the lyrics and found the reference to making love to a woman. My, how things change over the years. Katy Perry sang about kissing a girl and liking it in 2008 and it shot straight to #1, but 'back in the day', Sophie's song was deemed 'somewhat controversial'. Is it okay to be lighthearted about a flirty kiss like Katy, but if you sound like you have real passionate love for another woman like Sophie does, it's taboo? Anyway, Sophie's delivery of the lyrics is nothing short of orgasmic. This is one of the best songs to sing along to nice and loud in the car cruising down the highway.
  • Gladys from Chicago, IlBack in 2005, there was a summer replacement show cqalled "Baby One More Time"; the premise was that disappeared bands or artists would regroup, talk about where they'd been or what they'd been doing, and then play their best-known songs. Anyway, Sophie B Hawkins was one of the artists, and somewhere in the course of the interview she described herself as being either "pansexual" or "omnisexual"--I don't remember which, but they're not so far apart in meaning. Basically, I took it to mean that she was turned on by the world as a whole.

No matter what you think of that, this is STILL an awesome song.
  • Camille from Toronto, OhOh yeah, the passionate way the song is sung; what a hit. I don't really understand which lyrics are about a woman singing this to another woman. I just think it is a fabulous tune and love the sentiment: DAMN! I wish I was your lover!!!! I mean, who hasn't met someone in their life that secretly, you have that thought pop up in your mind.
  • Theresa from Murfreesboro, TnOh yeah the best song of the early '90s. This was my jam, still awesome!
  • Fulu Thompho from Limpopo, South AfricaThe END video showed some homosexual activities going on between two woman so is it to say that Sophie B. Hawkins is a lesbian.
  • Jesse from Hazlehurst, GaThanks for having that last Bridge!
  • Rodimusben from Harrisonburg, VaYou can really feel the longing coming out of Sophie's voice and the lyrics in this song. Very powerful.
  • Dave from Cardiff, WalesWow, I used to love Sophie B. Hawkins! Whatever happened to her?
