• Jeff from BostonMy personal take on this song is that all the lyrics (which Jim wrote) refer to himself and others simultaneously. For example, Jim is the "killer on the road" hitch-hiker, while also being the person warning against the killer on the road, reflecting two facets of his personality. He is the one who needs to be taken "by the hand, make him understand" while also being the one who does in fact understand this. For me, maybe the most interesting lyric is "an actor out on loan". Perhaps Morrison saw himself as "acting" the part of the rock star, that fame felt temporary ("on loan"), and that his image didn't reflect the way he saw himself. Just my speculation.

  Avid hitchhiker and reader Jim would have known this notorious story well and it clearly informed other songs and a desire for other projects. What's striking to me is that the truth - as written in six short declarative sentences - makes the song that much more haunting and evocative. The gift of a poet.

I read in "No One Here Gets Out Alive" that he (Jim) went to live in Paris in March 1971 and died over there July the 3rd 1971. It wasn't announced about his death in the U.S. until about a week later. I remember how I cried when I heard about it, too!
