Songfacts®:

  • Buddy Red played all the instruments on "Sexy," a song that drew inspiration from Jimi Hendrix. Red told Songfacts the story behind the song:

"I love that 'Jimi chord.' The guitar chord that he uses on 'Stone Free,' his first self-written single. I fiddle around with that chord up and down my guitar all the time, and one day, I came up with a groove that felt half-groovy, half-raunchy. It reminded me not only of Jimi, but the leg shakin' associated with James Brown, Mr. Soul Man himself.

Once I performed and recorded the drum beat, and bass lines, I remember sitting in my car the night of a jam session to write the lyrics. I wanted something simple, fun, and a bit more devious. Something that represented how little I gave a s--t about relationships and love in general, cause of what I was going through. I wanted to create a song to call out all the freaks, and scare away the squares. I didn't want something beautiful and darling. I wanted something intoxicated and SEXY.

The song felt rough and abrasive from the start. I liken my vocal performances in that song to a screaming banshee in heat. Sometimes it's a bit embarrassing for me to listen to alone, let alone with people in the room, but it's authentic. Organic.

I took the song as far as I could by myself, then had the fortune of having David Ryan Harris's suggestions in one of the studio sessions for it, and he turned the song from a cool idea, to a complete journey. My older sister Nique Nique did the background vocals too!"
  • Red names the girl that's got him all roiled in this song:

    Your name is Nikki
    Your hair is wavy
I can't get you out of my mind

He told Songfacts: "I knew a girl named Nikki at the time, and she worked at a nightclub out of town. I thought of her when I was thinking of the lyrics, so I added her into the equation. She seemed to personify when I was feeling at the time; it was nothing personal. It could've been Jackie, Stacey, or Licky, I didn't wanna think too hard about fictional women. I wanted a real woman I knew. I sent her the song when I first recorded the words. I don't know if she cared."
  • Buddy Red (real name: Messiah Harris) is the son of rapper T.I. and the stepson of Tameka Harris from Xscape. You might remember him from the VH1 reality series T.I. & Tiny: The Family Hustle, which aired from 2011 to 2017.

"Sexy" is part of his debut EP, Bad News, released in 2026 while his dad was on his retirement tour. By this time, Red was well known in the Atlanta music scene and had released some acclaimed singles, including "1958" and "Sold His Soul."
  • Buddy directed the music video himself. Those glitchy shots he got using an old Video8 camcorder. "My camera is genuinely falling to pieces internally, so it’s a miracle the footage was extracted!," he said.
