• "Why Don't You Say So" is a tense relationship song about communication breaking down. Dexter and the Moonrocks frontman James Tuffs senses his partner wants to leave and asks her to say it plainly instead of leaving him suspended in romantic limbo.
• Tuffs trades lines with Arizona singer and songwriter Avery Anna. The band first met up with Anna during a visit to Nashville around April 2026 after she expressed an interest in working with them. "It wasn't awkward at all," guitarist Ryan Anderson recalled to Atwood Magazine. "It was like we already knew each other, you know? Just good vibes."
  
  There was no immediate rush to record a duet. The Nashville meeting was simply an opportunity to get acquainted and see whether they might work well together. They expected Anna to visit the Texas studio where the band records around June, but that plan fell through. After completing the album, the group reconsidered "Why Don't You Say So" as a potential collaboration. They sent Anna the track, and she returned it the following morning with her vocals already recorded.
• Anna Avert had a say in which song she would sing on. She wanted to avoid the predictable arrangement in which a rock band recruits a female singer to lend her voice to a slow, gorgeous ballad. Instead, she was drawn to a track that offered something different.
• Seven songwriters are credited: All four members of Dexter and the Moonrocks, along with Avery Anna, Andrew Baylis and Evan McKeever. Baylis' other credits include Jelly Roll's "Dead Man Walking" and Sleeping With Sirens' "Bloody Knuckles." Evan McKeever also worked on Motionless In White's "Playing God" and Miranda Lambert's "Wranglers."
  
  The band's regular producer, Taylor Kimball, produced, recorded, and mixed the track, and also played electric guitar.
• "Why Don't You Say So" was released on October 2, 2026, on Dexter and the Moonrocks' debut album, Friends That I Don't Like. The band hadn't planned on making a full-length record until March 2026 when "Freakin' Out" was talking off. The project then came together rapidly.
• Issued as the album's focus single, "Why Don't You Say So" debuted at #98 on the Billboard Hot 100 dated October 17, 2026, the band's second Hot 100 hit after "Freakin' Out." It gave Avery Anna another Hot 100 entry after her collaboration with Sam Barber, "Indigo."
• The song fits the album's wider examination of relationships strained by emotional instability, damaging habits, and competing needs. While the preceding single, "12 Steps," deals with a more direct attempt to escape a difficult situation, "Why Don't You Say So" dwells on the uncertainty of not knowing whether a relationship can be saved.
• By the time Friends That I Don't Like arrived, the band had been playing "Why Don't You Say So" at every show for several weeks. There was a practical reason for playing it so often: Anderson described it as "sort of a difficult song," and regular live performances helped the musicians become more at ease playing it together.
