  • Dexter and the Moonrocks formed in 2021 in Abilene, Texas, a city of around 125,000. They describe their sound as "Western Space Grunge," a genre name they coined themselves and liked enough to name their 2024 EP after.

"We realized that oil workers like to listen to Alice In Chains, and the goth kids like Tyler Childers - so why couldn't we do both," lead singer James Tuffs told Soul Kitchen Music Hall.
  • Before forming Dexter and the Moonrocks, the four members had very different day jobs. James Tuffs was a fry cook, Ryan Anderson a concrete surface decorator, Ty Anderson an oil field operator, and Ryan Fox coached kids' baseball.
  • None of the band members are named Dexter. James Tuffs loved the '90s cartoon Dexter's Laboratory, so that's where it came from. The band name has always been a running joke - their label entity is even called "Who's Dexter Enterprises."
  • When a TikTok user named Mitch posted a clip of their debut single, "Couch," to the car-enthusiast community on the platform, the response was so huge it launched the band almost overnight.
  • They recorded their 2025 EP Donkey Flats in a double-wide trailer in Texas owned by their bass player, Ty Anderson. They called the EP a return to their roots: "No fancy frills, just us."
  • Their song "Sad in Carolina" debuted at #1 on Billboard's Alternative Airplay chart in December 2024, making them only the second act to top that chart in 2024 with their very first entry, following Myles Smith's "Stargazing" earlier that year.
