Songfacts®:

  • "Mi Chico" is an Afro house-driven summer single by Romanian DJ and producer DJ Goja (Ovidiu Marius Goja), built around a fleeting but intense attraction on the dancefloor. The title comes from the Spanish phrase "mi chico" ("my boy"/"my guy").

"I wanted to combine the Afrobeat style with a summer vibe and that's how 'Mi Chico' came about," Goja told Kiss FM Romania. "Spanish in songs has always conveyed to me a summer mood and good mood."
  • Goja came up with the idea for "Mi Chico" while he was working on his children's music project, Piky Songs. "Through children's music I understood what catches the public and I wanted to try to make an Afrobeat song on the same structure as children's music (easy to remember lyrics and a lot of repetition)," he told Kiss FM Romania. "A week followed in which I did many chorus variations, and finally I came to 'Mi Chico.'"
  • After the song took off online, Jason Derulo congratulated Goja on Instagram. "We started talking about music production, and after several conversations we proposed that we make a new version together. He was delighted with the idea, and we immediately got to work," Goja told Kiss FM.

Over the next two weeks, they reshaped the track with Derulo's vocals and pop instincts, while Brazilian singer Melody added another layer to its globe-spanning blend of Afro house rhythms, English lyrics and a Spanish refrain.
  • Goja released the Jason Derulo and Melody version on June 26, 2026, accompanied by a glossy music video shot in Paris. Directed by French filmmaker and choreographer Kevin Bago, the clip stars Goja, Derulo, Melody and a troupe of around 30 dancers, including the celebrated French dance duo Les Twins.
