  • Emerging from the ashes of her 2020 divorce from fellow musician Ruston Kelly, Kacey Musgraves' "Deeper Well" is a powerful anthem of personal growth and resilience. It's a story about navigating crossroads, facing dark energy, and ultimately discovering a wellspring of deeper love within oneself.

"Sometimes you reach a crossroads," Musgraves reflected, acknowledging the natural shifts life throws our way. "You get blown off course, but eventually, you find your footing and forage for new inspiration."
  • In the lyric, there's an acceptance of the past mixed with the unwavering determination to move forward.

No regrets, baby, I just think that maybe
You go your way and I'll go mine
It's been a real good time
But you got dark energy, somethin' I can't unsee
And I've got to take care of myself
    I found a deeper well

"Deeper Well" isn't about forgetting or erasing the journey, but embracing the lessons learned and seeking out a brighter future.
  • It's not just the toxic marriage that Musgraves talks about jettisoning. In the second verse she references her past marijuana use. She used to "wake and bake" and "hit the gravity bong" that she made herself, but she realized that these were unhealthy ways of coping. Musgraves decided to let go of these bad habits and find a deeper well of happiness.

Musgraves has made numerous references to her enjoyment of weed throughout her musical career. When she performed her CMA Song of the Year, "Follow Your Arrow," at the ceremony, the "roll up a joint" lyric was repeatedly bleeped out.
  • This introspection is carried by a light, almost folky melody, a departure from Musgraves' typical Nashville sound. Recording at New York's Electric Lady Studios, known for its "mojo" and "great ghosts," further adds to the song's unique energy.
  • Musgraves co-wrote "Deeper Well" with frequent collaborators Daniel Tashian and Ian Fitchuk. They collaborated on her 2018 Golden Hour album and co-produced her entire 2021 Star-Crossed record.
  • The accompanying music video, directed by Hannah Lux Davis, visually underscores the song's themes. Musgraves, clad in prairie chic, traverses a surreal landscape where rocks defy gravity and light dances around her. It's a visual representation of navigating uncharted territory while embracing the unknown. Musgraves says it's for "the witches, the cottage girls and the nature ladies."

Davis previously directed Musgraves' visuals for "High Horse" and "Rainbow."
  • Kacey Musgraves performed "Deeper Well" along with "Too Good To Be True" on the March 2, 2024 episode of Saturday Night Live. It marked the third time she'd been the musical performer on the sketch show, following in May 2018 and in the fall 2021.
  • Musgraves faced some hair-raising moments while filming the "Deeper Well" video in Iceland. "We picked literally the worst possible week to go. It was high wind advisories - I almost got blown off that cliff," she told Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show. "I was almost like, 'This video will be my death announcement.' It was a sheer drop down to the ocean. It was treacherous. Even the locals were like, 'This is scary.'"
