Songfacts®:

  • An "enigma" is a word that describes a mysterious person who is a puzzle to others. Here, Lady Gaga sings of a one-night-stand involving a mysterious romantic adventure.

We could be lovers, even just tonight
We could be anything you want
We could be jokers, brought to the daylight
We could break all of our stigma
    I'll, I'll be your enigma

Like Chromatica's lead single "Stupid Love," Gaga is saying here love shouldn't be taken too seriously.
  • Gaga wrote this lighthearted song through the eyes of a single woman on the loose. It was one of the first tracks she penned for Chromatica, likely before she began a relationship with entrepreneur Michael Polanksy in early 2020.
  • "Enigma" initially served as the title track for the album before Gaga changed its name to Chromatica. It also refers to the Mother Monster's Lady Gaga Enigma Las Vegas residency that ran from late 2018 to February 2020.
