Songfacts®:

  • Luke Bryan professes to a lady here that he can offer her a better kind of love as he was reared in the south. The ballad was released as the lead single from the Georgia native's Here's To The Farmer EP.
  • The Boot asked Bryan for his definition of the title phrase. He replied:

"I think a southern gentleman is... there's a lot of parameters of that. I think holding women in the utmost highest respect and being polite and being a classy person is certainly a definition of a southern gentleman. Conducting yourself with manners and etiquette and being a good person."
  • Other artists that have recorded songs about being a gentleman include Theory of a Deadman, PSY, The Saturdays and Panic! At the Disco.
  • Luke Bryan admitted the first time he ever played the song, it hadn't exactly been planned. "What was funny was I totally did that performance off the cuff, so I'm glad it turned out that good... 'cause most of the time when I go off the cuff like that, I screw 'em up, you know," he said.

"So I didn't mess that one up," Bryan added laughing.

  • Ariel from StanfordI think that even when luke goes off the cuff, he still sounds amazing. I wish I had that much talent. I have been a luke bryan fan for going on 11 years now and I will always be a luke bryan fan. He's actually the one who inspired the boots I wear. I bought some basic black boots, got some turquoise stones and leather straps, and hot glued them to the boots to make them look more feminine. They are practically falling apart, but since they were inspired by luke, I'm never getting rid of them. Even if I can no longer wear them. That's how much I love luke. And he truly is a southern gentleman.
