• When Milli Vanilli released their heartbroken ballad "Girl I'm Gonna Miss You" in July 1989, it sounded like it had stumbled into the wrong album. Known for their dance-pop smash hits "Girl You Know It's True" and "Baby Don't Forget My Number," this was a distinct shift - a syrupy ode to lost love. Yet, somehow, it worked. The mastermind behind this curious concoction was German producer Frank Farian, the same man who years earlier brought us the disco phenomenon Boney M. Clearly, Farian had a knack for catchy tunes and elaborate schemes.
• Rather than the infectious breakbeats of their previous hits, "Girl I'm Gonna Miss You" features a funky, intricate drum pattern with thudding heartbeats and the occasional woodblock sound. Farian co-wrote the track with two German collaborators, Dietman Kawohl and Peter Bischof-Fallenstein, who had stuck with him since the Boney M days.
• Milli Vanilli became the poster children of musical fraudulence, but that particular poster took a while to fall off the wall. Farian had recorded "Girl You Know It's True," the band's debut single, with a trio of Black American artists, singers John Davis and Brad Howell and rapper Charles Shaw, who were stationed at a US Army base in Germany. But because Farian didn't think the three had that elusive "star quality," he hid them from the public, hired two good-looking guys named Rob Pilatus and Fab Morvan, and told them to act like they were the actual singers. They weren't, but they were good at lip-syncing, which at the time seemed like a fair tradeoff.
  
  Their album All Or Nothing was hastily released in the US as Girl You Know It's True after Clive Davis, sensing dollar signs, picked up Milli Vanilli for his Arista label. The first single, "Girl You Know It's True," hit #2, and its follow-up, "Baby Don't Forget My Number," topped the chart. Then, "Girl I'm Gonna Miss You" did the same, becoming their second #1 in the US. Like their other singles, it was also a global hit, reaching the top spot in Austria, Belgium, Canada, the Netherlands, and Switzerland. Life was good. Milli Vanilli was on top of the world, the album was certified six times Platinum, and they even won Best New Artist at the 32nd Grammy Awards.
  
  Then, Charles Shaw decided to spill the beans. The ensuing lip-syncing scandal exploded and Arista Records went into full damage control; they dropped Milli Vanilli from their roster and Girl You Know It's True was unceremoniously deleted from their catalog. To top it all off, Rob and Fab had to return their Grammy.
• In 2024, "Girl I'm Gonna Miss You" resurfaced in the Netflix true-crime series Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. It tells the story of Lyle and Erik Menendez, who were convicted of killing their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, with shotguns in the summer of 1989. The song plays at Jose and Kitty Menendez's memorial service.
  
  Robert Rand, author of a book on the Menendez murders, confirmed that "Girl I'm Gonna Miss You" was played toward the end of the service. The choice of this song for a funeral service is portrayed as strange and inappropriate, what you would expect from a pair of sociopathic killers.
  
  The series' use of "Girl I'm Gonna Miss You" sparked a resurgence in streaming, catapulting the song back into the UK Singles Chart's Top 40.
• Two other Milli Vanilli classics also found their way into the show's soundtrack: "Girl You Know It's True" plays as Lyle and Erik travel to their parents' funeral, and "Blame It On The Rain" features in a scene where Lyle and Erik listen to it in their car, and also over the first episode's closing credits, which, fittingly enough, is titled Blame It On The Rain.
• "Girl I'm Gonna Miss You" was fashionably revived in 2026 when it was used in a Saint Laurent ad campaign featuring the K-Pop star Rosé, actor Connor Storrie and model Liu Wen.
