The New Radicals are the creation of Gregg Alexander, who uses various musicians for his projects. His most consistent collaborator is singer/songwriter Danielle Brisebois, who is also an actress. When she was a kid in the '70s and '80s she showed up on All in the Family, Knots Landing and The Love Boat.
There's only one New Radicals album - Maybe You've Been Brainwashed Too in 1998 - but Gregg Alexander released solo albums in 1989 and 1992. Danielle Brisebois has also put out material as a solo artist.
New Radicals are best known for "You Get What You Give," one of the most lasting songs of the '90s. It was never a big hit, peaking at #36 in the US after gradually finding an audience, which means it wasn't overplayed and we never had a chance to get sick of it. The song is four minutes of youthful idealism with a title that serves as a credo: you get what you give back to others.
The group pretty much vanished in 1999 as Gregg Alexander shied away from the spotlight. He remained active as a songwriter, using the pen name Alex Ander. His co-writes include "Murder on the Dancefloor" by Sophie Ellis-Bextor, "Lost Stars" by Adam Levine, and "The Game Of Love" by Santana (featuring Michelle Branch). He later recorded "Murder on the Dancefloor" and "Lost Stars" with the New Radicals, and in 2026 the group teamed with Michelle Branch for a new version of "The Game Of Love."
Gregg Alexander doesn't make a lot of public appearances but he did dip his toe into politics in 2024 when he threw his support to Kamala Harris, who often used "You Get What You Give" in her presidential campaign.
New Radicals vocalist Danielle Brisebois co-wrote and co-produced three Natasha Bedingfield songs from her 2004 debut album, including "Unwritten." She also co-wrote Bedingfield's 2008 hit "Pocketful Of Sunshine."
After releasing their 1998 album Maybe You've Been Brainwashed Too, the New Radicals didn't put out another original song until 2026, when they returned with "One Night Only (Break Loose Break Free!)" for the romantic comedy One Night Only. In the interim, they did release some covers of songs Gregg Alexander wrote for other artists.
